Parade is a bunching onion (scallion) variety that produces thick, mild white stems perfect for grilling whole. Unlike bulbing onions, these grow in clumps and can be harvested continuously all season.
Onion: Transform tiny transplants into generous, pungent bulbs right in your garden! These kitchen workhorses swell through photoperiod-dependent bulbing, so selecting the correct variety for your latitude is critical: long-day types for northern growers (bulbing at 14-16 hours), short-day types for the south (bulbing at 10-12 hours), and intermediate types in between. Choose storage varieties for months of keeping, or sweet varieties like Walla Walla to enjoy fresh.
• Growing Tips: Transplant 4-6 weeks before last frost, spacing 4-6 inches apart; ensure latitude-appropriate variety selection (long-day for north, short-day for south).
• Sun Requirements: Full sun (6 hours minimum).
• Preferred Soil: Loose, well-drained, fertile soil; maintain consistent moisture until bulbing begins.
• Harvest Details: Harvest when tops fall over naturally (typically 90-120 days); cure bulbs in a warm, dry location for 2-3 weeks before storage; properly cured storage varieties keep for months.
