A classic herb for the home garden, lemon balm is a mint relative that grows strongly for many years. It makes a round 18 to 24 inch wide plant that you can keep harvesting from week after week. We often use lemon balm to make fantastic, bright-flavored teas. It thrives in a pot or container where it can’t spread and take over too much of the garden bed.
Lemon Balm: An amazingly fragrant perennial from the mint family with a deeply lemony flavor. Used often a medicinal herb or in teas or desserts there should be some lemon balm in every herb garden. It does equally well in pots, either indoors or out, as it does in the garden. But the more sun we can give it the happy, healthier and faster it will grow.
Growing Tips: Lemon Balm can get be to be quite large. It will spread to fit its area so I strongly encourage planting them in pots of almost any size. If you are going into the garden bed, give them about 18 inches of space. Once establish they are remarkably rugged and an easy grower. Harvest as much as you want as often as you want to encourage more tender, young growth.
