Salt and Pepper cucumbers have unique pale yellow skin with dark green stripes that look almost speckled. The compact vines produce crisp, sweet cucumbers perfect for fresh eating or pickling, with excellent disease resistance.
Cucumber: Cucumbers are the ultimate summer crunch machine, transforming heat into crisp, refreshing fruits for fresh eating, pickling, or specialty uses like spa water. These productive vining crops are available in slicing, pickling, and unique specialty varieties like the sweet, round lemon cucumber. Whether you choose compact bush types for small spaces or vigorous climbers that yield 10-15 pounds per plant when trellised, frequent harvesting ensures continued production for up to 6-8 weeks.
• Growing Tips: Transplant 1-2 weeks after the last frost when soil reaches 65°F (wait until nighttime lows reach 60°F+ for best results); space bush types 12 inches apart and vining types 24 inches apart; provide a trellis for vining types.
• Sun Requirements: Full sun (6-8 hours minimum) is required for vigorous growth and maximum fruiting.
• Preferred Soil: Rich, well-drained, slightly acidic soil (pH 6.0-7.0) with high organic matter; heavy feeders requiring consistent moisture and nitrogen; mulch heavily to maintain even moisture and warm roots.
• Harvest Details: Pick daily during peak production when fruits are still firm (typically 50-70 days); harvest slicing types at 6-8 inches and pickling types at 3-5 inches; overripe fruits become bitter and seedy.
